Scott Joplin: Magnetic Rag
Scott Joplin: Maple Leaf Rag
Aaron Copeland: Rodeo (Hoedown)

Videos:
Bruce Springsteen: Born in the USA
Madonna: Don't Tell Me

QUESTIONS: Can you recognize the distinctly American flavor of the Ives and Joplin music? Can you see how Copeland's Rodeo has a clear American West theme? What is the similarity between Springsteen's Born in the USA and Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov? How does Springsteen's style compare with Mussorgsky's? Can you compare Springsteen with other nationalist composers? Why is Springsteen's song (and video) nationalist and not patriotic? How many nationalist characteristics can you list from Springsteen's song and video? With regard to Madonna's "Don't Tell Me" video, can you identify the nationalist aspects of the music? (Some aspects should be obvious, but others are more subtle.) Be sure to compare this video with Aaron Copeland's ballet, Rodeo.
