Politics and Music: Class Meetings

Professor Courtney Brown

Meeting #2: Beethoven's Music in the Context of His Lifetime
LECTURE NOTES
SELECTIONS played in class:
(All by Beethoven)
Symphony No. 3, Allegro Con Brio
Overture to Fidelio
Wellington's Victory
Symphony No. 9
, Molto vivace
Symphony No. 9, Ode to Joy (Choral)
POINTS: These are pieces that were composed at significant times in Beethoven's life. Note that there are distinct changes in the character of the music as Beethoven tried to express various viewpoints, often colored with distinct and at times contrasting political tones. Contrast the Symphony No. 3 (Eroica) which originally was dedicated to Napoleon - and which seemed to celebrate revolutionary republican political ideals - with the militaristic feast in Wellington's Victory which celebrates Napoleon's defeat in 1913.
QUESTIONS: Are Beethoven's works during his lifetime representational or associational with respect to their political content or tone?
