Politics and Music: Class Meetings Professor Courtney Brown Meeting #17: Political Protest Music of the
1960s and 1970s, Part II Video Selection: QUESTIONS and DISCUSSION: Today we both listened to music and discussed it. Do you see how Jimi Hendrix transformed the Star Spangled Banner to reflect the level of national discord that was present in American society during that time? Listen carefully to the music so you can hear the conflict between the theme of American nationalism rising and falling as it engages in a musical fight with dissonance. What you get is a reflection of the America of the moment, an America existing within the context of social stress that both results from and causes political transformation. The conflict of the times also led to Bob Dylan's relevant songs which portray aspects of alienation. Listen closely to Dylan's words. Can you hear the themes of individualism ripped from the context of normalcy, alienation born of the incongruence between society and the young of the period? What are some of the similarities between some of Dylan's songs and those of Bob Marley?
