Politics and the Environment

Optional Paper Topic

Directions: Due the last day of class. Five pages total. This is a thinking essay. To obtain background information, you may refer to your text books, search the Internet, or go to the library, as needed. However, formal references are not required. Double spaced, normal margins. This paper cannot satisfy the Emory College writing requirement. Remember that plagiarism to any degree is a serious violation of the honor code.

Topic: Begin by reading the articles assigned dealing with the possible collapse (due to global warming) of the water pump that circulates tropical water to the northern areas of the planet ("A Chilling Possibility" and "The Pentagon's Weather Nightmare"). Assume that you are an analyst for the U.S. Congress studying this subject, and you have been requested to submit a formal analysis. From this perspective, analyze this problem from with an eye towards predicting the political consequences should this occur. In particular, think of the problems of refugees, migration, weakening states, and other issues that are involved when violent conflicts are precipitated by resource scarcity. You can even develop a model with boxes and arrows if you like, similar to the ones we studied in class.
