Politics and the Environment

Test #1 (make-up)

Directions: If you missed the test for a reason that is acceptable to the College Office (or if you made pre-arrangements with me), you can take it as a take-home. It is open book and notes, and graded as a paper. Honor code applies, of course. Answer all questions, typed, approximately two pages per question, double-spaced. Put it in my mailbox in 327 Tarbutton (the main office). If you did not already make approved pre-arrangements with me for taking this exam as a take-home, include a cover sheet that has the reason why you needed to miss the exam, and a copy of any official document backing it up (such as a letter from the Health Center, coach of the Emory team you are on, etc.) Time: 24 hours after you begin the exam.

1. Describe the relationship between oil, geography, and war. Pay particular attention to details that support the idea of this relationship.

2. Discuss and relate the following things with regard to the global environment. (a) Thomas Malthus and David Ricardo, (b) the carrying capacity, (c) exponential growth, (d) logistic growth, (e) subsistence living. How can the carrying capacity of a region temporarily move below the current total population? What happens then?

3. Describe a detailed model of how violent conflict can result from scarcity of renewable resources. The model should include ideas such as unequal resource access and weakened states. Draw a diagram of the model and explain it with words. Give examples.

4. Describe the debate regarding whether or not the United States should place its nuclear waste in Yucca Mountain. Draw most of your answer from the material in your textbook.
