Freshmen Advising and Mentoring at Emory Program
(Revision date: 23 September 2007)

Course Introduction:

FAME is designed to help introduce Emory freshmen to both Emory and Atlanta. Each FAME course is structured differently, depending on the outlook of the FAME faculty advisor and his or her FAME "team." Let us begin with our team. Here we are:

Faculty Advisor: Dr. Courtney Brown (Political Science)
Staff Leader: Sarah C. Cook (Emory's Association of Alumni)
Student Leader: Sarah Brandt (Senior)
Student Leader: Srikar Kumar (Sophomore)

You can always contact me (Courtney Brown) using email via the contact link at the bottom of the navigation bar on the left. You can contact the other leaders by clicking on their names above.

Our FAME group will be meeting in our assigned room only a few times during the semester, so be sure to look at the weekly outline below carefully. Also, some meetings will take place at times other than that shown in OPUS, so be sure to look at the times carefully as well.

All FAME meetings are mandatory for all students. Attendance will be taken by the student leaders. Missing a meeting will entail doing make-up work that will be more involved than simpy attending the meeting, so be sure you attend all meetings. Grades are S/U for FAME.

WEEKLY OUTLINE

First Meeting:
Date and Time: Tuesday, 4 September 2007, 11:30-12:30 (normal class time)
Topic: Getting better acquainted and a Q&A. You will have lots of questions during your first week, so this is important.
Class Location: 303 Anthropology Building

Second Meeting:
Date and Time: Tuesday, 11 September 2007, evening (see "Class Location" below)
Event: Shopping and dinner. Tonight we will be going to the Dekalb Farmers' Market, arguably the largest and most interesting produce market outside of a peasant market in Mumbai. You have to see it to believe it. Dinner is on Emory, and we will eat cool stuff at the market. They have a really interesting buffet. You will also be given some money to purchase exotic groceries to bring home.
Class Location: We will meet behind the Woodruff P.E. Center at 5:45 p.m., and then proceed to transportation. This is our big night out.

Third Meeting:
Date and Time: Wednesday, 19 September 2007, evening (see "Class Location" below)
Event: President Carter's Town Hall Meeting
Class Location: We will assemble in front of the Anthropology Building (on Dickey Drive side) at 7 p.m. We will then walk over to the Woodruff P. E. Center where the event will be held. We need to arrive at the P. E. Center by 7:15 and security is tight, so be on time. This is an event to tell your grand kids about. Be there or be square.

Fourth Meeting:
Date and Time: Tuesday, 25 September 2007, 4-6:30 p.m. (late afternoon) Note time change!
Event: Multicultural and social issues on campus. This is a presentation by Dean Pricilla Echolls. It contains a number of brief video presentations and a discussion. This is a special presentation just for our class, and it is really important.
Class Location: 208 White Hall.

Fifth Meeting:
Date and Time: Tuesday, 2 October 2007, 11:30-12:30 (normal class time)
Event: Emory's Carlos Museum. This is a really great museum, and a "must see" for all Emory students.
Class Location: We will meet at 303 Anthropology Building and then walk over to the museum.

Sixth Meeting:
Date and Time: Tuesday, 16 October 2007, 11:30-12:30 (normal class time)
Event: Emory's Career Center
Class Location: We will meet at the North Decatur Building in the Career Center, room 200, 1784 North Decatur Road.

Seventh Meeting:
Date and Time: Tuesday, 13 November 2007, 11:30-12:30 (normal class time)
Event: Pre-Registration Advising
Class Location: 303 Anthropology Building (But check this closer to the class date to make sure the room has not changed.)
